Dr Rupert Johnson is a Senior Lecturer at the School of Law, The University of Notre Dame Australia, Fremantle. Prior to his appointment in January 2020, Rupert lectured and tutored in property law and torts at Edith Cowan University from the establishment of the law program in 2005. Rupert subsequently held academic and administrative positions at ECU, including that of Associate Dean, Law. During his tenure, Rupert engaged with The Law Society of Western Australia in the inception and delivery of Law Student Mentoring Program, and the coordination of a law practicum unit. Rupert’s service to law students and teaching was recognised by two Vice Chancellor’s Awards.
Rupert is a barrister and solicitor of the Supreme Court of Western Australia and the High Court of Australia, and has held a legal practising certificate for over twenty years. He has enjoyed a long association with the Northern Suburbs Community Legal Centre (Inc) as a board of management member.
Rupert’s thesis Private Property Rights and the State. A Study of Regard and Increasing Disregard in Western Australia: 1829-2016 was completed as part of his Doctor of Juridical Science (SJD) candidature at The University of Western Australia in 2017.
Rupert has a particular interest in the relationship between the State and private property rights and colonial land tenure, and the law of torts. Rupert’s writing has included property law contributions to the encyclopaedia The Laws of Australia, and torts law contributions to the Australian Law Dictionary (Oxford University Press). He is presently contributing to a new text on real property law in Western Australia.
