Welcome from the Head of Discipline
Associate Professor William Gibson
It is a privilege and a pleasure to welcome you to Physiotherapy.
Our programs produce skilled physiotherapy clinicians and researchers. The emphasis on critical thinking and clinical reasoning produces work-ready graduates who can contribute meaningfully within the physiotherapy profession and wider health care arena. Our main program is the fully-accredited, four-year undergraduate degree in Physiotherapy – the Bachelor of Physiotherapy. This academic program provides a rigorous educational experience designed to encourage active learning. The curriculum promotes acquisition of knowledge and skills and balances this with the clinical ability to apply these skills in the practice of physiotherapy. Students undertake extensive and early clinical training which provides the practical skills and experiences necessary to facilitate an effective transition from study to work.
We also offer the option of a Bachelor of Physiotherapy program with Honours and a double degree of Physiotherapy and Exercise & Sport Science. Each of these programs provide a curriculum that is fully accredited by the Australian Physiotherapy Council and allow for registration as a physiotherapist through the Physiotherapy Board of Australia.
The world of health care is changing. Professional boundaries are evolving and status quo is no longer an option. Our staff are highly accessible and we offer small class sizes to provide individual attention and prepare our students for future professional life. Students are supported and mentored throughout the program by professionals, teachers and experts in their fields. Our staff know our students names and care about their professional and personal growth.
The vision of the School and its staff is to graduate physiotherapists who are respected and sought after in public and private sectors, both nationally and internationally, and who have an acknowledged potential to be future leaders in our profession and in health care in general.
The Physiotherapy learning area also offers Professional Doctorates, Masters and a PhD program which allows students to develop and contribute new knowledge to assist the health care of our community. Having research programs within our School contributes to a rich undergraduate learning and teaching environment.
We pride ourselves on our values-based curriculum, on our strong clinical emphasis and especially on our ability to focus everything we do around you, the student. This provides a fulfilling university experience and ensures our graduates are highly valued, work-ready Physiotherapists, with the skills and ability to deliver excellent standards of practice and are ready to continue professional growth and development.
If you are joining us as a new student, returning to complete your degree, or enrolling in a postgraduate degree, you are very welcome here and the staff look forward to working with you, our future colleague.
