Welcome from the National Head of School
Professor Michael Quinlan
Welcome to The University of Notre Dame Australia and to the School of Law.
The School of Law wants to assist you to achieve your full potential, whether you choose to study law with the aim of joining the legal profession and working in a large commercial firm or in a smaller, suburban practice, as in-house counsel or as a barrister. You may even be planning to use your law degree to pursue another career. Whatever your goals may be, at Notre Dame we are committed to providing our students with an excellent standard of training for the legal profession and an excellent standard of teaching and learning. Whether you’re studying an undergraduate, graduate-entry or postgraduate program, our practical courses will help you to thrive as a lawyer.
The School’s academic staff include many experienced barristers, solicitors and legal advisers. Their experience is as diverse as the legal profession itself – some having acted for corporates or worked in politics, and others coming from large and small firms, government, not-for-profits or religious organisations around Australia and overseas. As an example, before joining Notre Dame in 2013, I worked for over 23 years at the large commercial law firm Allens, where I was a partner for more than 14 years. Allens has offices across Australia, including in Sydney and Perth, and is in a strategic alliance with global law firm Linklaters.
As a law school within a Catholic university, we have a commitment to the pastoral care of our students and to developing graduates with a solid ethical foundation and an ability to think critically. Our objective is to produce graduates who not only understand the law as an academic discipline, but also have the skills they need to become great lawyers keen to make a real contribution to the common good.
If you are joining us as a new student or returning to complete your degree, I wholeheartedly welcome you. If you are considering studying with the School of Law on our Fremantle or Sydney Campus or online and have any questions about the University, our law school or the degrees we offer, we would be delighted to hear from you.
