Standard Operating Environment

What’s on a workstation

Windows 10 is the standard operating environment (SOE) deployed by our University on all campus computers. The default line of business applications installed on campus computers are:

  • Adobe Acrobat Reader DC (PDF reader)
  • Adobe Digital Editions (e-book Reader)
  • Endnote X9 (Referencing tool)
  • Google Chrome, Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox (Web browser)
  • IBM SPSS Statistics 25 (Statistic and reporting tool)
  • Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2016 (Office Tools)
  • Microsoft Teams (Communication and online collaboration tool)
  • Peoplesoft: Self Service (Staff management)
  • Photo Story (Presentation tool)
  • Skype for Business (Communication and online collaboration tool)
  • Snipping Tool (Screen capture tool)
  • Sophos Anti-Virus (Anti-virus and security)
  • VLC Media Player (Media player)
  • Write-N-Cite (Referencing tool)
  • Zoom (video-conferencing tool)

The Information Technology Office (ITO) handle all application testing and installation, hardware setups, updates and upgrades on all University-owned devices.

Log On

To log onto a University-owned computer, complete these steps.

  1. Press the keys ALT+CTRL+DEL
  2. Agree and click OK to the Acceptable Use Policy
  3. Enter your University ID and password

Start Menu

All approved applications are accessible under the Start Menu; located in the bottom left of the desktop. The Start Menu is split into two sections:

Left Side: All installed applications approved for use.

  • Listed under their company name in alphabetical order
    For example:
    Office applications (Word, Excel) are listed under Microsoft Office.
    SPSS is listed under IBM SPSS.

Right Side: Quick Access links

  • Web Browsers: Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox
  • Microsoft Office 2016: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook (staff only)

These groups cannot be removed or added to as they are under administrator control.

If you are unable to find an application under the menu, type the name of the application and the search menu will populate with any matching results.
