On August 6, 1993, the Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord,
Pope John Paul II promulgated Veritatis Splendor,
his encyclical on "The Splendour of Truth."
He deemed it necessary to recall "certain fundamental truths of Catholic
doctrine, which ... risk being distorted or denied" in the field of moral theology.
To acknowledge and celebrate its twenty-fifth anniversary, the University of Notre Dame Australia will sponsor a multi-disciplinary Symposium on the legacy of this encyclical.
Speakers have been invited to present 30-40 minute papers on the theme. In roundtable discussion, fellow presenters will then respond to the paper. Collegial dialogue will be an opportunity to consider St John Paul II's contribution and influence to the status questionis of moral theology and philosophy in the post-Conciliar Church.
