Clinical placements

Experiential placements in the Kimberley offer your students unique learning opportunities. Students gain an understanding of social determinants of health and remote multi-disciplinary health care models. They develop communication skills and work ready attributes. Remote placements are well-regarded by most employers and often assist students to attain employment. Remote placements offer much more than just development of clinical competencies.

Majarlin Kimberley Centre for Remote Health facilitates placements for allied health and nursing students from all Australian universities. Majarlin assists universities to source and organise placements in hospitals, community health, private practice, NDIS providers, NFP and health organisations and in the Majarlin work readiness programs (schools and aged care). Majarlin also organises immersion experiences in remote communities.

Majarlin Kimberley Centre for Remote Health supports students to have positive, life-changing placement experiences. Majarlin supports students by:

  • Facilitating placement opportunities tailored to student and university requirements
  • Providing clinical educators (where appropriate)
  • Subsidising student travel and accommodation costs
  • Providing social and emotional wellbeing support
  • Delivering multi-disciplinary learning experiences, both onsite and in the classroom
  • Ensuring all students receive cultural security training
  • Supporting learning through reflection and de-briefing
  • Organising regular social and networking events
  • Providing IT and education support

Cultural orientation

All Majarlin, students will attend an orientation day which outlines Kimberley health, placement expectations, health and wellbeing. The day also includes cultural security training with the Majarlin Cultural Security Officer.  This includes information on clinical yarning, appropriate forms of communication and dress when on country, history of Yawuru people and cultural protocols.

Students will be required to complete the WACRH online cultural orientation program before coming to the Kimberley.

Clinician CPD

If university personnel are travelling to the Kimberley, we ask you to contact us. If appropriate, we may ask university academics to deliver education to clinicians in our region.

Research

Majarlin researchers are keen to partner with academics who are interested in conducting remote health research and who endorse principles of respect and reciprocity.
