Blessing of the Fleet family fun day

Rain fails to dampen spirits at Notre Dame’s Blessing of the Fleet family fun day

Heavy rain may have forced the cancellation of the annual Blessing of the Fleet procession through Fremantle last Sunday, but the celebrations proceeded at Notre Dame’s first ever family fun day.

This year was meant to be the first time that Mouat Street was included in the Procession’s route, and the fun day was organised to enable the University’s supporters and alumni to come along and enjoy the atmosphere of the special day.

But as the rain got heavier, the Blessing of the Fleet committee made the difficult decision to cancel the procession for only the second time in 74 years.

The Blessing of the Fleet is a wonderful Fremantle tradition that highlights the strength of faith that has helped to sustain our fisherman over many generations. That same faith is what sustains our University, so it is both an honour and a privilege that we can play an active part in what is truly a highlight of the Fremantle community calendar.

By activating our University spaces and inviting members of our community of all ages to attend our events, we are also hoping to introduce new generations to this historic event, helping to ensure that it remains a significant part of Fremantle’s long-term future.

Special guests included members of the Blessing of the Fleet organising committee, local clergy, State Government Ministers and City of Fremantle dignitaries.

We look forward to doing it all again next year, when - with a little luck - the weather will be kinder.
