Notre Dame de Paris: A message of solidarity this Holy Week

17 April 2019

The entire University community wishes to express our feeling of solidarity with the people of France. Not only do we share a patron in the Virgin Mary but we also share the French people’s pride and love in their beautiful Cathedral that has for so many centuries stood in the very centre of their national life.

Notre Dame de Paris is the heart of France but this wonderful Cathedral and all that she signifies is not something that is only sacred to the French people. It is something sacred to Catholics throughout the world and even beyond the Catholic world, among all those who appreciate beauty, including the music for which Notre Dame de Paris is world famous.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of France this Holy Week. We remember the line from the Book of Lamentations: Quomodo sedet sola civitas – how lonely the city stands.

We wish our entire Notre Dame community a safe and holy Easter.

Acting Vice Chancellor
