Students Celebrate Graduation in Perth

20 July 2021

In a first for The University of Notre Dame Australia (UNDA), the Perth RAC Arena played host to graduation this year, with nearly 5,000 students, staff, family, and friends celebrating the achievements of our 2020/2021 graduates over seven ceremonies.

For 2020 graduands, these ceremonies marked an important milestone, having been virtually conferred awards last year due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Pro Vice Chancellor Student Experience Professor Selma Alliex said the students had been patiently waiting for their time in gowns and mortar boards, and they deserved the chance to graduate in-person.

“We know how valuable and exciting graduation is for our students,” Professor Alliex said.

It is a time for celebrating the fantastic achievements and ongoing successes of the graduating cohort and, for those who were unable to celebrate with friends and family last year, this opportunity allowed students to share their hard work with loved ones.

In the Vice Chancellor’s closing address, Professor Francis Campbell congratulated graduates and acknowledged their “fortitude, patience and resilience” in the face of unexpected challenges during their final year of study.

“I want to pay tribute to our graduates for how you have come through these few months and remained focused on your studies. The difficulties you have faced during this pandemic will pass, but the strength of character and the resolve that you have all shown – this has tested you, and it will last a lifetime,” he said.

“For many, today is the culmination of their formal educational journey. Many of you, no doubt, will continue to higher degree studies and some of you have today graduated with our highest research degrees, our doctorates. But today marks a rite of passage for all, so it is appropriate that when we look back in gratitude, we also think of those first teachers; the first teachers in your home, your primary school and your secondary school and we say thank you to them for the gift of knowledge and meaning that they have passed down.”
