The University of Notre Dame Australia offers prayers of comfort and condolences to friends and family of His Eminence Cardinal George Pell, Australia’s highest-ranked Catholic cleric, who has died in Rome at the age of 81.
A towering and influential figure in the landscape of Catholic life in Australia, Cardinal Pell leaves an enduring legacy and will be remembered for his visionary leadership, intellectual acumen and faithful service to the Church.
Vice Chancellor Professor Francis Campbell noted Cardinal Pell’s key contribution to the growth of the University. “Cardinal Pell had an enormous influence on the development of Notre Dame, most significantly as co-founder of our Sydney Campus. His pastoral vision, wise counsel and unshakeable faith will have a lasting impact on our university community.”
Our university owes a debt of gratitude to Cardinal Pell for his work in helping to establish our Sydney campus, as well as his ongoing support for Notre Dame’s presence as a national Catholic university.
The University will be offering Mass for the repose of the soul of Cardinal Pell in the coming weeks.
