    This program would be ideal for teachers of primary mathematics who wish to specialise in mathematics, including numeracy coordinators, primary teachers who wish to teach in lower secondary classrooms and out-of-field secondary teachers of mathematics who wish to upskill to better understand the pedagogical content knowledge required to teach mathematics in the middle years.

    Graduates of this program may choose to enrol for a Master of Education (Curriculum) at Notre Dame.

  • Program summary

    Students are to complete the following courses:

    • Leading Mathematics in the Middle Years
    • Developing Mathematical Thinking
    • Mathematics Learning in the Middle Years
    • Assessment, Intervention and Differentiation in Mathematics Teaching and Learning

    Students may commence their studies in January or October, subject to the availability of each course.

    To be eligible for admission applicants must be eligible for teacher registration in Australia.

  • Learning outcomes

    Upon successful completion of The Graduate Certificate in Education (Middle Years Mathematics) graduates will be able to:

    1. Critically apply and reflect on advanced knowledge of specialised educational theory and practices within mathematics education in the middle years of schooling
    2. Critically evaluate issues in mathematics education in the middle years of schooling and associated pedagogical considerations in relation to significant recent developments in education
    3. Use initiative and a high degree of personal autonomy to analyse complex issues in mathematics education in the middle years of schooling
    4. Use communication and technical skills to implement, justify and interpret issues in mathematics teaching and learning in a variety of contexts.
  • Career opportunities

    A Graduate Certificate in Education (Middle Years Mathematics) will provide qualified and experienced teachers with the skills and knowledge to become leaders in the field of mathematics in Government, independent and Catholic primary and high schools. Careers include middle years maths teachers and curriculum leaders.
