Graduate Certificate in Health Leadership

At The University of Notre Dame Australia, School of Medicine, we are dedicated to the provision of education that is designed and presented in collaboration with the health sector to support the translation of learning into practice.

The Graduate Certificate in Health Leadership provides a unique opportunity to study, network and learn from experts across the professions. The WA Health, Institute for Health Leadership (2019), leadership model focuses on ‘Courageous, values-aligned, collaborative and systems-focused’ leaders, which will form the foundations of this program.

This program is for all Australian health professionals and is offered in sponsorship with WA Health.

  • Why study this degree?

    The Graduate Certificate in Health Leadership (GCHL) supports health professionals who want to consolidate or further their leadership career. The program provides students with a comprehensive introduction to the core principles of management and leadership within the complex health arena, in which consumers and their significant others play a central role. Students complete four core courses to support their development as a health professional leader and undertake peer coaching and a significant workplace project to demonstrate application of learning.

  • Program summary

    The Graduate Certificate will be provided through Master Classes to engage both academic and health industry speakers to provide an engaging, thought provoking and safe space to explore the complexities of health and health leadership.  Master classes provide a space for the sharing of ideas, exploring solutions, networking and building communities of interest.

    The program is available for students from all states and territories.

    The Four compulsory Program courses within the Grad Certificate include:

    • Contemporary Leadership in Health A
    • Contemporary Leadership in Health B
    • Systems-focused Thinking A
    • Systems-focused Thinking B

    OR

    • Contemporary Healthcare Leadership A
    • Contemporary Healthcare Leadership B
    • Systems-focused Thinking in Healthcare A
    • Systems-focused Thinking in Healthcare B

  • Mode of study and assessment

    The Graduate Certificate in Health Leadership is provided over one year of part time study with Master Classes to engage both academic and health industry speakers to provide an engaging, thought provoking and safe space to explore the complexities of health and health leadership.  Master classes are supported by online learning modules. Course assessments promote student engagement with their workplace, including peer coaching and a workplace innovation project, evaluation and presentation.

  • Entry requirements

    To be eligible for admission to the Graduate Certificate in Health Leadership, applicants must meet the following specific requirements:

    • As a minimum qualification, a recognised Bachelor degree in a health profession; or
    • A Bachelor degree in another (non-health) area with evidence of specific professional experience in health; or
    • Evidence of a senior management or leadership role in the health sector.
  • Learning outcomes

    Upon successful completion of the Graduate Certificate in Health Leadership, graduates will be able to:

    1. Effectively apply management and leadership theories underpinning work practice within the health context
    2. Analyse contemporary issues within health professional leadership and their significant influence on management and leadership practice
    3. Interpret governance and risk as applied to the work context in consideration of management and leadership roles and responsibilities
    4. Employ critical reflection to encourage on-going learning to maintain and improve professional knowledge and skills; and
    5. Apply oral presentation and report writing skills and apply these for the dissemination of project findings.
  • Career opportunities

    A Graduate Certificate in Health Leadership can lead to careers as business administration manager, corporate services manager, health services manager, general manager, health promotion officer, health researcher, medical administrator, policy and planning manager.

  • Real-world experience

    You will learn from our academics, who are leaders in their field. There are no practicum requirements for this program.

  • Scholarships

    Refer to your health service, Department of Health website or other organisations for further information on scholarships for health professionals.

  • Fees and costs

    Standard program costs do not apply for this program.  Program costs are reduced due to the unique nature of this industry based – university supported program.

    The FEE-HELP loan scheme assists eligible fee-paying students with the payment of all, or part, of their tuition fees, not including additional study costs such as accommodation or textbooks. Your FEE-HELP debt will be indexed each year in line with the Consumer Price Index.
