Graduate Certificate in Health Leadership

At The University of Notre Dame Australia, School of Medicine, we are dedicated to the provision of education that is designed and presented in colloboaration with the health sector to support the translation of learning into practice.

The Graduate Certificate in Health Leadership provides a unique opportunity to study, network and learn from experts across the professions. The WA Health, Institute for Health Leadership (2019), leadership model focuses on ‘Courageous, values-aligned, collaborative and systems-focused’ leaders, which will form the foundations of this program. Provided in partnership, all students benefit from program fee reductions.

  • Why study this degree?

    The Graduate Certificate in Health Leadership (GCHL) supports health professionals who want to consolidate or further their leadership career. The program provides students with a comprehensive introduction to the core principles of management and leadership within the complex health arena, in which consumers and their significant others play a central role. Students complete two core courses to support their development as a health professional leader and undertake a significant workplace project to demonstrate application of learning.

    Contemporary Leadership in Health (50 credit points)

    This course develops and supports student’s contemporary understanding and application of management and leadership in health practice. This will focus on the application of theory and institutional frameworks to support decision making in the complex health arena, which engages multiple stakeholders including various disciplines, consumers and their significant others. Students will examine leadership theory, collaborative practice and courageous role modelling. Through master class attendance, engagement in paired student coaching sessions and reflective practice, students will apply learning through practical engagement with management and leadership activities.

    Systems-focused Thinking (50 credit points)

    This course develops a system level thinking approach to the complexities that drive planning and decision making in the complex arena of health. Students will be encouraged to expand their understanding of the health system, and national and international polices, frameworks and innovations that may influence local practice. Through master class attendance and the completion of a work based project, students will critically appraise and relate learning.

  • Program summary

    The Graduate Certificate will be provided through Master Classes to engage both academic and health industry speakers to provide an engaging, thought provoking and safe space to explore the complexities of health and health leadership.  Master classes provide a space for the sharing of ideas, exploring solutions, networking and building communities of interest.

    Core courses:

    Contemporary Leadership in Health (50 credit points)

  • Mode of study and assessment

    The Graduate Certificate in Health Leadership is provided over one year of part time study. Students attend four full day master classes on campus at Fremantle with the option of video link attendance for the first three, with the final master classes an on campus project symposium. Master classes are supported by online learning modules and course assessments support student engagement with their worksite, including a work place innovation project, evaluation and presentation.

  • Entry requirements

    To be eligible for admission to the Graduate Certificate in Health Leadership applicants must meet the following specific requirements:

    • As a minimum qualification, a recognised Bachelor degree in a health profession
    • Evidence of specific professional and/or industry experience.
  • Fees and costs

    As the Graduate Certificate in Health Leadership is provided in partnership with WA Health, this has significantly reduced the initial first year student fee to $2,000. This must be paid in full.
