Vice Chancellor updates ON THURSDAY 15 AUGUST NOTRE DAME OFFICIALLY FAREWELLED CELIA HAMMOND, VICE CHANCELLOR FROM 2008 TO 2019. FOLLOWING THE FEAST OF THE ASSUMPTION MASS, A JOINT CELEBRATION WAS HELD TO CELEBRATE FOUNDERS WEEK AND CELIA’S CAREER AT THE UNIVERSITY. After a remarkable 21 years at Notre Dame, including overseeing the University’s transformation into one of Australia’s highest performing universities over her 11-year Vice Chancellorship, Celia Hammond was successful in her election to the federal seat of Curtin. The University is pleased to welcome Celia’s successor, and fourth Vice Chancellor, Professor Francis Campbell, who will be officially commencing his duties in February 2020. Professor Campbell is currently the Vice Chancellor at St Mary’s University, Twickenham in London where he has achieved significant success in the past five years. Professor Campbell has extensive tertiary qualifications, including an MA in International Relations from the University of Pennsylvania in the USA and an MA in European Integration from the Katholieke Universiteit in Belgium. Additionally, Professor Campbell has a diversity of experience outside of academia: he has been Ambassador for the United Kingdom to the Holy See and Private Secretary to former British Prime Minister Tony Blair. “Professor Campbell has an outstanding reputation as an academic and diplomat, and brings considerable wisdom, leadership and international relationships to his new role at Notre Dame,” said Chancellor of Notre Dame, the Hon. Chris Ellison. Professor Campbell expressed his excitement about joining Notre Dame. “As a University, Notre Dame draws on centuries of teaching, scholarship and research; foundations which it shares with over two thousand Catholic universities and colleges across the world,” he said. “As Vice Chancellor, I’m as interested in our students’ personal growth as much as their academic development, because the two are uniquely intertwined. “I aim to protect and nurture the University's outstanding achievements, in particular, the recognition by its students as the best university in Australia for overall quality of educational experience."
