Alumni Magazine Issue 5

Celebrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Alumni On 30 October, Notre Dame was proud to celebrate the achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander graduates in Fremantle with the unveiling of alumni honour boards. This inaugural and significant celebration aimed to reconnect attendees—which included alumni, their families and mentors, as well as current students—with the University. School of Medicine student Corey Dalton shared personal experiences of the struggles and acceptance he found in his approach to studies, and expressed a gratitude for the recognition of Aboriginal culture on Campus that he hopes inspires students for years to come. “The last few years I have spent many hours in Manjaree – studying, mentoring and being mentored. Having a University that recognises the importance of Aboriginal culture and seeks to encompass this in a curriculum and its own campus culture makes studying here fantastic.” Nyungar Elder and WA artist, Juanetia (Neta) Knapp, painted art onto the borders of the honour boards to bring the colours, symbols and stories of the land to life. If you are an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander alumnus of our Fremantle Campus (or you know someone who is) who has yet to hear from us about being featured on the honour board, please email alumni@nd.edu.au A B O R I G I N A L & T O R R E S S T R A I T I S L A N D E R A L U M N I Alumni Magazine – Page 6 O U R A L U M N I
