News & Updates Refurbished St Benedict’s Library shortlisted for sustainability award A revitalised St Benedict’s Library was unveiled on the Broadway Campus earlier this year. The renovated space offers a modern, eco-safe learning environment for students. The new Library has been recognised for its environmentally friendly design, and was shortlisted for a 2020 Sustainability Award in the ‘Education and Research’ category. The floor-to-ceiling transformation was undertaken specifically to meet students’ needs. New additions include indoor plants, expansive windows to harness natural light, and modular furniture that allows for versatile use. Collaborative study booths, individual study spaces and a dedicated silent study room combine with improved technology, new climate control and sensor lighting. Nursing Alumna of the Year In Fremantle, the School of Nursing & Midwifery were proud to award their annual accolade to alumna and Notre Dame lecturer, Laura Posa. Passionate about end-of-life care and the mental health effects on the nurses who care for these patients, Laura has been commended for her dedication to her research studies in this area, alongside her teaching. “ICU nurses support and advocate for the most critically ill and vulnerable patient population. They often leave late, arrive early, and miss breaks to ensure their patients receive the highest standards of care. If you look after the nurse, you also look after the wellbeing of the patient,” says Laura. Aligning with Notre Dame’s focus on holistic patient-centred care, Laura’s research will be a powerful motivator for further improvements to end-of-life care. Anniversary Milestone In 2020 the Fremantle School of Nursing & Midwifery celebrated its 20th anniversary. The first Nursing students commenced their studies in 2000, and since then the School has gone from strength to strength. This milestone was especially significant as the World Health Organisation declared 2020 as the Year of the Nurse and Midwife. The designation of 2020 is also especially welcome as it coincides with the 200th anniversary of the birth of Florence Nightingale, one of the founders of modern nursing. We extend our congratulations to the School on this anniversary as we celebrate staff, students and alumni that have all contributed in some part to its success. Alumni Magazine – Page 4
