40 Notre Dame Postgraduate Guide Fremantle Campus Notre Dame’s School of Medicine is unique among medical schools in Australia. Reflecting its postgraduate focus, our Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree is open to those who have already completed an undergraduate degree in another discipline, have had the time to reflect on their professional calling and who qualify for entry on a number of criteria, not just high scores. Accredited by the Australian Medical Council, our degree is underpinned by problem-based learning (PBL) and is delivered to small groups so that each student gets the attention they need, when they need it. A focus on clinical placements extends throughout the four-year program to ensure students get broad-based experience in a wide variety of settings including public secondary and tertiary hospitals, private healthcare organisations, aged care facilities and community-based family practices. The final two years are discipline- based and include experience in medicine, surgery and critical care, primarily taught in hospital settings. Underscoring our aim to contribute significantly to health care in rural, remote and other under-served communities in Western Australia, rural placements are offered as part of the program, with 25 per cent of third year students spending the entire year in a rural setting. Additional postgraduate degrees in Health Professional Education are offered online to health professionals who currently teach or plan to teach in a clinical or tertiary education setting. When our medicine students were asked to rate our performance, in the latest Federal Government survey of Quality Indicators for Learning and Teaching (qilt.edu.au) , they gave us top marks for the following in the learning area of postgraduate Medicine: ›› #1 in WA for Overall quality of educational experience (91.9%) – national average 72.8% ›› #1 in WA for Student support (92.8%) – national average 67.1% ›› #1 in WA for Learning resources (84.5%) – national average 76.8% ›› #1 in WA for Teaching quality (92.9%) – national average 73.3% ›› #1 in WA for Learner engagement (94.2%) – national average 75.6% ›› #1 in WA for Skills development (97.6%) – national average 83% WHY CHOOSE NOTRE DAME FOR YOUR POSTGRADUATE MEDICINE DEGREE? ›› Throughout the Medicine degree program you learn innovative clinical skills from top practising academics. ›› You will graduate with a strong commitment to, and capacity for lifelong learning, reflective practice, leadership, personal health and wellbeing. ›› Our research focus provides a firm basis for continued engagement in scholarly research aimed at advancing the body of medical knowledge. ›› You have the unique opportunity to combine your technical skills within an ethical framework. ›› Experience in rural areas provides the understanding necessary to contribute meaningfully to the health disparities experienced by Aboriginal people. It aims to reduce the impact of chronic pain in the community through research and the education of medical students in chronic pain management. Through the leadership of the Churack Chair, research undertaken by the School of Medicine is translated into the education offered to our medical students – providing graduates with a unique understanding of chronic pain. In collaboration with St John of God Subiaco Hospital, the Chair builds relationships and forms partnerships with a range of organisations and is currently undertaking research into chronic pain in ways that are consistent with the University’s Objects.
