14 CHINA Foreign correspondent For students of Journalism, scoring an internship at a leading travel magazine provides a unique opportunity to learn from some of the best in the business. And, when the internship lands you among six million people, in the middle of a northern hemisphere winter, in a major city in China located on the shores of the internationally famous Yellow Sea, that’s real news. Fourth year Law/Communications & Media student Charlie Smith had a five-week internship at the English-language Redstar magazine—a travel magazine for tourists and expatriates in the eastern Chinese city of Qingdao— which was life changing. “We got to see some of the best spots in the city all while writing reviews and creating content for the magazine,” says Charlie, who was offered the opportunity due to Notre Dame’s partnership with InterChina, a company that helps students find internships throughout China. “Each day was different – we did everything from reviewing the live music scene to learning and writing about Chinese New Year celebrations. “I have a much greater appreciation of how different journalism can be in another part of the world, and I made many valuable contacts for the future.” > Discover more about international opportunities for students at notredame.edu.au/international.
