But when that final test is a 200km, six-day sea trek along Western Australia’s stunning Northwest Cape coastline the experience is more likely to be totally magical. The culmination of three years of study, students of Notre Dame’s Outdoor Recreation degree put their skills to the test in an epic expedition. Paddling in sparkling seas the students travelled in sea kayaks for six days, first going south from Exmouth along the North West Cape coast before heading north east up to Onslow. “The expedition is remote, challenging and environmentally unique, it’s the highlight of their degree,” says Program Coordinator Duncan Picknoll. “After the support vehicles drive away, we don’t see anyone else for the entire six days.” Students plan and lead the expedition themselves, bringing together all the skills they learn during the degree program including orienteering, reading the weather, safety preparations and piloting. They also research the cultural, historical and environmental importance of the land they are on. > Discover more about our Outdoor Recreation degree on page 68.
