But his first practical placement in the aged care environment opened his mind to the myriad opportunities ahead. “I had a high paced life throughout my twenties and I wanted to translate that into my work. However, working in aged care was so rewarding and such a great experience, that I decided to keep an open mind about what could come my way,” says Jakodi who is currently in his second year of Nursing. “Nursing can take you into a great variety of specialist areas, from aged care to paediatrics and from inner city emergency care to general practice in remote communities. And if that’s not adventurous enough, it’s a career that can take you to almost anywhere in the world.” Through his practical experience Jakodi finds critical thinking essential not only in treating the illness, but also in understanding the patient’s values and culture so as to treat the whole person. “In Nursing, you need to look at things from a lot of different angles and realise that your way of thinking is not the only way,” he says. “You need to be able to understand on a deeper level how your patients see the world so that you treat them in a holistic way.” > Discover more about our Nursing degree on page 72. “You need to look at things from a lot of different angles and realise that your way of thinking is not the only way.” Nursing student
