Critical thinking The ability to think critically is central to the role of a teacher. Across all programs, you develop your critical thinking skills, challenging you to think deeply about issues regarding curriculum, pedagogy, equity and excellence. The Core Curriculum (Philosophy, Theology and Ethics) is a complementary suite of courses that deepen your capacity to engage with all aspects of the profession. The study of Philosophy is central to understanding educational theory and perspectives regarding pedagogy, psychology and curriculum design. Studying Ethics provides a foundation for you to develop ethical decision making skills, considering values, equity and perspectives of multiple stakeholders in schools. An introduction to Theology provides students of all faiths and backgrounds an opportunity to consider the relationship between faith and reason and the role of the spiritual life in an increasingly secular society. Professional experience You gain valuable professional experience in our four-year degree programs with a sector leading 32-weeks of practical teaching. You are supported by highly experienced supervisors who work closely with mentor teachers and School practicum coordinators to ensure you get the highest level of guidance. During the practicum you undertake a course of study. This gives you the benefit of the contemporary experience of practising educators and allows you to relate the teaching methodologies examined directly to your observation and teaching practice. Career opportunities Our degrees are fully accredited by the Teacher Registration Board of Western Australia and a complete spectrum of higher education programs, with an extensive range of majors and specialisations are offered. Your studies qualify you to teach across all sectors of education including in Catholic, Government and Independent schools. You can also attain full accreditation to teach Religious Education in Catholic schools. The accreditation is built into the degree for those who wish to acquire it. Literacy and Numeracy Testing for Initial Teacher Education students (LANTITE) All education students in Western Australia are required to sit the national Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education Students (LANTITE) and demonstrate the required minimum level of personal literacy and numeracy prior to graduation.
