The School has a specific focus on health promotion, exercise and the outdoors while also applying biomedical research to investigate disease processes. Practicums and internships are a compulsory requirement of all Health Sciences programs. Depending on your degree, they take place in community health centres, pathology laboratories, government departments, health promotion agencies, schools, voluntary service agencies, research laboratories, sporting organisations, gyms and adventure sports companies. See Hannah’s story on page 30. Placements range from 150 hours in Biomedical Science to 27 weeks in Health & Physical Education. This reflective and analytical style of thinking enables you to become an independent thinker and question what you read and hear. It influences how you communicate and visualise the world you live in. In the Health Sciences professions, you need to be able to review and critically evaluate information and apply an evidence-based approach to problem solving while thinking on your feet. At Notre Dame you learn how to do this. Accreditation A number of Notre Dame’s Health Sciences degrees are accredited by the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership, and Exercise Sports Science Australia. Double degrees You can combine a Health Sciences degree with a second degree, including those from the Schools of Physiotherapy, Business or Law.
