This commitment includes developing a better understanding of the needs of Indigenous Australians, providing opportunities for students to experience rural and remote medicine and a curriculum which embeds bioethics, advocacy and social justice. Our mission is to provide excellence in medical education, research and scholarship with the aim of graduating doctors to serve in areas of unmet need, specifically in the country’s vast remote and rural areas. To support the mission, we partner with The University of Western Australia (and from 2020 with Curtin University) for the Rural Clinical School of WA with 14 centres across the length and breadth of WA. We offer a Doctor of Medicine (MD) that has been fully accredited by the Australian Medical Council of Australia and is highly ranked by graduates in national surveys. Key features include a focus on small group teaching and problem-based learning, combined with rich clinical experiences across the entire program. The School also offers a Pre-Medicine Certificate, at an undergraduate level. This four-part program is studied in conjunction with a Notre Dame undergraduate degree. The Certificate program is designed for students who are interested in applying for the Doctor of Medicine program at Notre Dame upon the completion of their undergraduate degree. Clinical placements are embedded in the MD program and take place in hospitals, general practices, aged care facilities and other medical settings. In the last two years of the Doctor of Medicine program, you complete eight to nine week discipline-based rotations, usually in a hospital setting. You may also participate in the Rural Clinical School in third year. In the second year, you may spend six weeks in the Kimberley region as a part of the Broome – Learning On Country program. Facilities Operating from four buildings in Henry Street, the School of Medicine facilities include a 200-seat lecture theatre, a specialist medical library, simulated clinic rooms, a simulated hospital ward, clinical and procedural skills facilities and 13 tutorial rooms, all equipped with networked audio-visual equipment. You also have access biomedical science and clinical pathology teaching expertise in external laboratory-based settings. Accreditation The Doctor of Medicine degree is recognised by the Australian Medical Council as meeting the national standard of medical education, permitting a graduate to receive provisional registration and enter the medical workforce as a junior doctor. Admission requirements for the Pre‑Medicine Certificate Application to the Pre‑Medicine Certificate is made by invitation after ATARs are released, or if you are currently undertaking a full-time undergraduate degree at Notre Dame The selection criteria for secondary school leavers include the following: ›› academic record – ATAR of 90 or above; ›› personal qualities and motivation (as evidenced in the student’s personal statement); ›› contribution to school and/or community life; and ›› a desire to pursue a career in Medicine. Mature-age entry requirements include the following: ›› completion of at least one semester full-time study in any Notre Dame undergraduate degree maintaining at least a 65% average; ›› a recommendation letter from the Dean or Associate Dean; and ›› sufficient semesters remaining in the undergraduate degree to accommodate completion of the four courses of the Pre-Medicine Certificate (normally four semesters). Please note: the completion of the Pre‑Medicine Certificate does not guarantee you entry to the School of Medicine. However, should you meet the required GPA and GAMSAT scores, you automatically progress to the interview stage for postgraduate Medicine at Notre Dame’s Fremantle Campus.
