Father Beauchamp has been involved in The University of Notre Dame Australia since 1987 when the idea of establishing a new Australian Catholic University was presented to Father Edward Malloy, Father Beauchamp and their senior colleagues at Notre Dame by a visiting delegation from Western Australia. The delegation asked the University of Notre Dame in the United States to be involved to support the infant venture, which became known as the University of Notre Dame Australia. Vice Chancellor Dr Peter Tannock said that the University of Notre Dame in the United States provided Notre Dame Australia with many things including wise counsel, encouragement, inspiration by example, an understanding of the prime elements of a Catholic university, practical support, their name and 'credibility by association'. "Notre Dame in the United States has been with us through thick and thin," he said, "and it was in the hardest of times that Father Beauchamp was at his best for us. His wisdom, steadiness, support and strength were there, and he took the long view on what we might become. We are proud of his role as a vital part of our early history and we honour him for what he has done for us, and for the great contribution which he has made to Catholic higher education in the United States." During the ceremony, four former staff members: Doreen McCarthy, John Walsh, Esther Bevan and Peter Gravestock, and two current staff members: Tony Ryan and Patsy O'Donnell, were awarded with The 'Distinguished Service Medal' which recognises those who have made an exceptional contribution to the advancement of Notre Dame.
