We have had wonderful financial aid and 'in kind' support this year from many private benefactors, from governments, and from the Church. The commencement of our Sydney Medical School next February will be very significant. We received 500 applications for 112 places! So, too, will be the University's enthusiastic participation in World Youth Day in Sydney. What a great initiative for the Church and its prospective renewal in Australia! We will be holding our first Graduation Ceremony in Sydney in December 2008, a landmark occasion. I feel great confidence about the direction of the University at present, and its prospects of becoming an outstanding Australian institution. We know that there are plenty of challenges ahead, not least because the Bill Fairweather (1939 - 2007) University's Builder The University community acknowledges the significant contribution made by Bill Fairweather to the physical development of the Fremantle Campus over the past 10 years. A charitable and compassionate man, master builder, generous benefactor and valued friend. Australian higher education system is at present under much demographic pressure. However, w ith t he support of our benefactors, and governments, and above all, t he enthusiastic and united commitment of our exceptional staff and student communities, I feel, with great conviction, that the future is looking good.
