CELEBRATING 20 YEARS OF EXCELLENCE IN LEGAL EDUCATION “We looked at it as a place where lawyers could be trained in a slightly different way, with benefit both in preparation for entry into the practising profession and as a general education with wider importance for the good of society.” The Honourable Justice Neville Owen. More than 150 guests, including Guest of Honour and Keynote speaker Justice Neville Owen, joined Vice Chancellor, Professor Celia Hammond and the then Dean of the School, Professor Doug Hodgson, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the School of Law, Fremantle, in November 2017. Among guests at the Gala event, held in the University’s Drill Hall, were Senator Mathias Cormann (Federal Minister for Finance), Matt Keogh MP (Member for the Federal Seat of Burt and alumnus of the Law School), The Honourable Michael Mischin MLC and Professor Michael Quinlan (Dean of Notre Dame’s School of Law, Sydney). Professor Hammond, who began her career at Notre Dame in 1998 as a lecturer in the School of Law, said the calibre of the members of the original Planning Committee and Advisory Board was hugely important for the establishment of the Law School. “They have shaped the current and future direction of our Law School, which remains true to its mission of creating ethical, competent and job-ready graduates,” she said.
