I N P R I N C I P I O | 2 1 NEW ACQUISITIONS PAVE WAY FOR FUTURE GROWTH The rare opportunity to acquire prime real estate in the heart of both the Sydney and Fremantle campuses last year paves the way for Notre Dame’s future growth and development. Purchased at a total cost of $38 million, the two sites will provide an additional 11,000sqm of space to create state-of-the-art learning and research facilities. Bought at auction at a cost of $21 million in early November the 520sqm site along Sydney’s Broadway will be developed to a height of six storeys and provide the Campus with additional learning space of about 3100sqm. The new site increases connectivity to the existing Broadway buildings, providing dual street access to Broadway Road and Grafton Lane and offering the potential for walkways to other buildings operated by the University. The iconic Customs House in Fremantle’s West End was acquired in mid-November. Comprising three separate buildings, a total floor area of 8000sqm and street frontage on Pakenham, Phillimore and Henry Streets, the acquisition has increased the facilities of the University on the Fremantle Campus by more than 25 percent. It will deliver critical flexibility to the planned expansion of student learning spaces and accommodation on the Fremantle Campus and allow for the increased activation of ground floor areas in keeping with the Notre Dame West End Activation Plan. “The purchase of these sites is an exciting step towards expanding Notre Dame’s presence within Sydney’s premier educational precinct and Fremantle’s iconic West End,” said Vice Chancellor, Professor Celia Hammond. "They complement Notre Dame’s strategic goal of providing students and staff with the highest quality teaching spaces and facilities. “As with all of our projects, we will proceed with the redevelopment of both sites fully mindful of our role as a key member of the Fremantle and Sydney communities, especially the need to preserve the historical integrity of sites and neighbouring buildings in these locations. “And with our commitment to the Notre Dame West End Activation program, it will be an important contributor to the continued revitalisation of the city’s West End,” Professor Hammond said.
