Chris Ellison into the role and Michael L’Estrange as Deputy Chancellor. Thanking Mr Prendiville for his unwavering commitment to Notre Dame over the past 29 years, Professor Celia Hammond also acknowledged the support of both Mr Ellison and Mr L’Estrange. “They have all been selfless in serving the University. I am certain that the whole Notre Dame community continues to benefit greatly from their experience, leadership and devotion to our Objects and Mission.” While Peter Prendiville has stepped down from his role as Chancellor, he remains a member of the University’s Board of Trustees and Board of Governors. Mr Prendiville's association with Notre Dame goes back to 1989 when he was appointed a founding Director and Trustee of the newly established Fremantle Campus. He went on to play a major role in establishing both the Broome and Sydney Campuses before his appointment as Chancellor in 2016. The Chairman of family-owned business, Prendiville Group, Mr Prendiville oversees a portfolio of hotels and resorts, wineries and roadhouses. He is also a former Chairman of the Board of TourismWA. At last year’s EY Entrepreneur of the Year Awards he was named Australia’s Champion of Entrepreneurship, recognising his 35-year commitment to business development and philanthropy in Western Australia. “Peter has been brilliant, not only in his stewardship of the office of Chancellor, but for his unwavering commitment to Notre Dame, its students and community," said Vice Chancellor, Professor Celia Hammond. The University welcomed the Hon. Chris Ellison as Chancellor in January this year. Mr Ellison represented Western Australia in the Senate from 1993 to 2009. Before that he was a partner in his law firmWilliams Ellison. He served in the outer ministry and Cabinet of the Howard Government from 1997 to 2007 in portfolios including Assistant Attorney General, Minister for Schools and Training, Special Minister of State, Minister for Justice and Customs, and Minister for Human Services. He remains Australia’s longest serving Minister for Justice and is a current legal practitioner. In the private sector, Mr Ellison has served on the Board of Doric Construction, Chaired Australia’s North West Tourism and is currently a Director of the Commonwealth Superannuation Corporation. He is Chair of the Board of Trinity College, Perth, a Governor of Notre Dame since 2009 and a Director of Notre Dame since 2015. Accepting his appointment as Chancellor, Mr Ellison said: “I am honoured to become Chancellor of Notre Dame, an institution that I have been involved with for nearly 10 years, and associated with for many more.” Michael L’Estrange AO joined Notre Dame as Deputy Chancellor in April 2017. Mr L’Estrange AO began his career in public service in 1981 when he joined the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet. In 1996 he was appointed as Secretary of Cabinet and Head of the Cabinet Policy Unit. He served in that role until 2000 when he became Australia's High Commissioner to the United Kingdom. On his return to Australia, Mr L'Estrange served as Secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade from 2005 to 2009. He was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia in 2007. From 2009 to 2014 Mr L’Estrange served as Professor and Head of the National Security College at the Australian National University. Mr L’Estrange is a Board member of Qantas and Rio Tinto, and has been a Director of Notre Dame since 2014. In response to his appointment, Mr L’Estrange said: “I very much look forward to working with Chris and the Board of Trustees as Notre Dame continues to grow and build on its achievements.”
