  • Biography

Dr Chivers' research interests are in the area of child and adolescent health with a particular emphasis on motor control, disability, education and obesity. Her current research centres on bone mineral density and movement difficulties, specifically Developmental Coordination Disorder. She completed her doctoral studies in adolescent obesity working with the internationally renowned Raine Study in which she utilised epidemiological research methodology to explore causal pathways to obesity through statistical modelling. These investigations identified possible early preventive health measures that could be targeted to reduce the risk of obesity in adolescence. In 2010 she was awarded the RACGP Best Student Presentation Award at the PHCRED WA Annual Research Conference with a presentation translating her research results into practice for General Practitioners.

Drawing on these experiences, and working closely with Professor Max Bulsara, Paola now provides research and biostatistics training and advice to HDR students and staff in one-to-one sessions and numerous workshops across the country. Her enthusiastic and insightful teaching manner saw her win the 2015 University of Notre Dame Professional Development Award.

Paola is an Early Career Researcher with over a dozen publications and co-supervising a number of Masters and PhD students.

  • Research expertise and supervision

Motor Control, Disability, Obesity, Research Methods, Data analysis.

    Current Research
AMPitup Bone Density Project. This project is the first to report on bone density measures in adolescents with movement difficulties, in particular Developmental Coordination Disorder. We are also examining the effect of the AMPitup exercise program on bone density measures over time in the adolescents.

AMPitup Exercise Intervention Project. This research focus is on determining how best to develop physical fitness and movement skills in adolescents with movement difficulties (in particular Developmental Coordination Disorder) through exercising in a supportive, fun and non-competitive setting, as well as investigating the changes in long term physical outcomes.

Mixed Messages: What do young people understand about the Australian dietary guidelines for adolescents? The proposed study aims to confirm the level of understanding among youth regarding the guidelines, where they gather their knowledge about what they should be eating and identify any associations between their knowledge, knowledge sources and health promotion campaigns.

Western Australian Developmental Coordination Disorder Research Group. This unique collaboration between three Western Australian universities has resulted in a state initiated portal for information www.movegrowengage.com.au promoting research, programs and links to international organisations for parents, carers and professionals working in the field of Developmental Coordination Disorder.
