Graduate research

A Higher Degree by Research (HDR) is a program where most of the assessable content is completed as research.

We offer Doctoral and Masters HDR programs across our various schools. The below steps outline the process to apply for a HDR.

How to apply for a Higher Degree by Research (HDR) program

  • 1. Check your eligibility

It is important to select a suitable HDR program before you start the application process. Entry requirements are outlined on each program page.

  • 2. Define your research ideas

Identifying your research passion and ideas as a starting point before putting in an expression of interest is important. However, if you’re unsure about the discipline and your research ideas are vague, you may still submit an expression of interest. The relevant School contact will assist you in refining your initial research ideas.

  • 3. Submit an Expression of Interest (EOI)

Prior to completing a formal admission application, you need to complete an EOI. The EOI form collects information on your academic qualifications, research and professional experiences, and research interests or ideas for a research project.

Please note that submitting an EOI does not guarantee admission to the HDR program.

  • 4. Develop your research proposal

Once your EOI is reviewed, the School Postgraduate Research Coordinator will contact you and advise of your potential supervisory panel. Each HDR student must be supervised by a team of at least two supervisors (a principal supervisor and one or more associate supervisors).

Your supervisory team will discuss the research project and guide the development of a formal written research proposal.

  • 5. Submit an official application

Once the School is satisfied with the research project and can offer the appropriate supervision, you’ll be asked to submit a formal application. We recommended that applications are submitted by either the end of May or the end of November for the following semester intake.
