International volunteering inspires a new vocation , passion for study and philanthropy Celeste Holm BACHELOR OF NURSING CLASS OF 2018 After spending time abroad volunteering, enrolling in nursing at university seemed to be the natural next step for Celeste Holm. “I always enjoyed human biology and medical sciences in school, however I had no intentions of pursuing it at university,” Celeste said. “I first became qualified in early childhood studies and working in that industry for a few years before I experienced some health work as a volunteer in India and Africa. I enjoyed every aspect of it and decided to enrol in nursing the moment I arrived home from Tanzania.” After completing her Bachelor of Nursing at Notre Dame in 2018, Celeste began working for the Department of Health in Western Australia, specialising in Child and Adolescent Community Health services. The work has proved rewarding, enabling Celeste to make a difference in the lives of young Western Australians. “Working in the community and in schools allows you to be a holistic practitioner, and you can prioritise your time and schedule based on individual need. I love this so much about school health as it avoids a tick-box approach to care and you can really support a child and their family.” Celeste is currently completing her graduate nurse program through her work at the Department of Health, while also studying for a postgraduate qualification in this specialisation at Notre Dame. During her studies, Celeste was the recipient of The Southern Cross Care Outstanding Nursing Student Scholarship – Aged Care. In 2019 Celeste paid this forward by establishing The Holm Family Scholarship in Nursing, which assists second-year nursing students at Notre Dame. 2020 Nursing Anniversary The School of Nursing & Midwifery, Fremantle is thrilled to be celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2020!
