36 Going above and beyond “There’s no reward quite like the smile on the face of a child who has just achieved something they thought was impossible,” says Georgie Dolan. When she arrived at Castlereagh School in Willetton—a school devoted to teaching young children with intellectual and physical disabilities—Georgie was concerned that communication may be an obstacle to providing real help for the students. But the Physiotherapy student soon found her voice. “By taking a fun, playful approach I soon had them enjoying the exercises. It really helped them go over and above what they thought they were capable of and that joy of achievement was such a big reward for me,” says Georgie of her Work Integrated Learning experience, one of the many practical assignments undertaken by students as part of the degree program. “That learning experience was invaluable. It gave me the confidence to tackle challenging situations with ease as well as develop key skills in assessment and treatment.” PHYSIOTHERAPY
