For decades regarded as the exclusive domain of gym junkies and pavement pounders is gathering momentum in the mainstream of healthcare. Today it is widely acknowledged as not only playing a major role in maintaining good health but also as a proven therapy for reversing poor health and restoring good health. Responding to this growing trend, Notre Dame’s School of Physiotherapy recently opened a state-of-the-art training gym—the first of its kind in Western Australia—a facility aimed at giving students an extra edge when they join the workforce. “Today, exercise is integral to most health regimes whether they be preventive or remedial, pre- or post operative, from our children to our ageing population. It’s almost always part of the answer,” says the School’s Dean, Professor Sarah Love. “That’s why we decided on a facility that takes training for our students to a whole new level.” Designed by internationally respected lecturer in Physiotherapy, Dr Mervyn Travers, the 125sqm gym has the space, flexibility of layout and equipment to provide extensive hands-on training for all students. “What we teach at Notre Dame is not just theoretical, you are actually trained in real skills both to do it yourself and to teach your patients,” Dr Travers says. “The community is crying out for healthcare providers who are able to prescribe exercise tailored to their individual needs and health conditions. “Our hands-on learning in exercise techniques addresses a vast number of physiotherapy fields including sports therapy, aged care, paediatrics, pain management or occupational health. “With this unique teaching facility, our students are fully trained to get ahead of the growing exercise-based healthcare environment.” > Discover more about our Physiotherapy degree on page 75. “The community is crying out for healthcare providers who are able to prescribe exercise tailored to their individual needs and health conditions.” New, state-of- the-art training facilities
