'.I STUDENT I SERVICES STUDENT LEADS THE WAY IN SOCIAL JUSTICE Master of Leadership and Social Justice student Robyn Pickrell, is raising funds to purchase mosquito nets for residents of East Timor. Mrs Pickrell was inspired by the Millennium Development Goals which outline strategies to address extreme poverty in its many dimensions. This was further reinforced by her visit to the country last year. "Wh ilst I was in East Timor I truly understood the meaning of poverty. They are located so close to us in Australia, yet are quite disadvantaged. On my return I thought about the ways that I could assist the East Timorese to improve their standard of living. The East Timorese people earn a $1 a day so they're not likely to spend $8 on a mosquito net. If we can supply these and educate them on the benefits of their use, it is a simple, yet effective way to make a difference in the prevention of disease," said Mrs Pickrell. Mrs Pickrell has also been instrumental in starting up a social justice group at Notre Dame to assist with this and other causes. "Social Justice is one of our core values here at Notre Dame and I'd like to encourage my fellow students to get involved and be aware of the injustices that exist in the world. We may only be a small ripple in a large ocean, but you have to start somewhere." Service Learning & Volunteering Coordinator Jo Dallimore said, "Robyn lives what she talks. She is empowering people to become involved and helping them understand that they can make a difference." If you would like to assist Mrs Pickrell in her efforts to raise funds for this worthy cause, please contact Jo Dallimore in Student Services on 08 9433 0581. NQTRE DAME SPQRTS TEAMS EXCE L IN SEMESTER ON E By Sport, Recreation & Events Officer, David Mclean Two trophies, five teams qualifying for the Australian University Games and a couple of "sporting firsts" have contributed to semester one being highly successful for Notre Dame. The Mixed Touch Rugby Team claimed victory to become the first team ever to defeat UWA, who have won the trophy for all 13 years the competition has been held. First Year Physiotherapy student Shelly Matcham, who is a member of the University's Mixed Touch Ruby Team, has been selected to represent the nation in the Australian Women's Touch Rugby Team. Ms Matcham will compete in the All Nations Cup in New Zealand during October this year. She competed in the World Cup in 2003 and at 28 years of age thought her days of competing in international Touch Rugby Competitions would be over, but has been overwhelmed by the support from the School of Physiotherapy and the University. Our Men's Basketball Team triumphed, being the first Notre Dame Basketball Team to win the Western University Championships. Add to this the qualification of our Women's Water Polo Team, who became Notre Dame's first ever all women's team to qualify for the games, and the success of previous Uni Games teams, the Men's Water Polo and Rugby Union 7's teams, and there was plenty to cheer about for our sporting teams. Sport and Recreation Management student Ian Greenwell, has qualified to represent Australia at the World University Summer Games in Turkey this August. m He qualified for the team in the sport of gymnastics and impressed selectors with his performance at the National Championships, which also doubled as the selection trials for the Australian University Games Team. The World University Games are held every two years and Ian has become the first Notre Dame student to make the Australian team. The students have now started fundraising to help them in their quest to get to Brisbane to represent Notre Dame at the Australian University Games. Part of the fundraising involves seeking sponsorship for each team. If you are interested in sponsoring one of our sporting teams please contact me, David McLean on 08 9433 0585. Congratulations to all our students who competed for Notre Dame throughout the first semester. ~ \\ VIUJUJ/11/1/JJJJJJIIIIIIIIII\ A Notre Dame's women's water polo team
