1.3.5 Copyright activity
Now that you are a bit more familiar with copyright rules, test your knowledge with this activity.
Read each of the four scenarios carefully and select the most suitable answer from the options provided.
1. You get a book out of the library which is 100 pages long. You want to photocopy some pages to read for your assignment.
You are allowed to copy:
-
A. Correct! You are allowed to copy 10% or one chapter of the book for research or study.
B. No, this would mean copying 50% of the book, which is 5 times more than you are allowed.
C. No, you are not allowed to copy more than 10% of a book so this would be illegal even if you are using it for research or study purposes.
2. You are giving a group presentation and you want to discuss and play a song you have purchased legally.
You are allowed to:
-
A. No, this would be a breach of copyright and of Notre Dame’s licence agreement.
B. Correct! This would be an ethical and legal use of the song as long as it is being used for study or research purposes.
C. No, it is illegal to upload any copyrighted material to a public space such as YouTube. This would be a serious breach of copyright and you could be prosecuted.
3. You find a really funny cartoon on the internet that you want to use in your assignment.
You are allowed to:
-
A. No, the cartoon’s creator has a right to have his or her work correctly attributed and it is your responsibility to do this. So even if the cartoon is copyright-free, you must cite your source. If you do not, it is plagiarism.
B. Correct! It is important to check the permissions on the website and to abide by the terms of use.
C. Although this would be a safe option, it does not solve the issue of how to use the image legally and responsibly.
4. You want to show some clips from a copyrighted YouTube video in a tutorial presentation. You also want to record the tutorial so that your friends and family can give you feedback on your presentation afterwards.
You are allowed to:
-
A. No, you are not permitted to rebroadcast the video in public without permission, even if it is part of a recording. This would be a breach of copyright with possible legal consequences.
B. No, you are not permitted to rebroadcast the video without permission, even if you just show a few clips in your presentation. This would be a breach of copyright with possible legal consequences.
C. Correct! This is OK as long as no other copies are made. Although this is not a university activity, you are using the recording privately to get feedback on your presentation, so it is still being used for study purposes.
Well done! You have completed this activity.
