2.1.11 Effective reading

Click on the following headings for some effective reading techniques.

  • As you read, keep in mind what information you need and what questions you need to answer in an effort to address and fulfil the expectations for your assignment task.

  • Skimming is an important skill to help you decide quickly if a particular resource meets your information need. To do this, focus on article summaries, headings and subheadings, diagrams, and opening and closing paragraph sentences.

  • When you identify a relevant article, you will want to spend more time considering the author's arguments and ideas. Use techniques such as annotating the text, visually representing the main concepts, examining how concepts and ideas relate to each other, or questioning how the concepts and ideas relate to your information needs.

  • By reflecting, you relate what you have read to the assignment task. This will help you apply these new ideas to support your own arguments.
