2.2.4 The referencing guide
The University of Notre Dame uses four referencing systems:
- American Psychological Association (APA) – generally used by Arts & Sciences, Business, Education, Health Sciences, Nursing and Physiotherapy.
- Chicago Footnotes – generally used by Arts & Sciences and Philosophy & Theology
- Australian Guide to Legal Citation (AGLC) – used by Law
- American Medical Association (Vancouver) (AMA) – used by Medicine
Students should refer to the assignment guidelines or Course Outline to identify which referencing system to use for each assignment.
Each referencing system has slightly different details and formatting requirements. The placement of symbols such as brackets, commas and full stops, will vary for each referencing system and is important in getting the referencing correct. Think of it like an email address – if you don’t put the symbols in the right place, your message cannot be sent!
For full details, examples and formatting requirements of each of the referencing systems, go to the Referencing Guide on the Library website: https://library.nd.edu.au/referencing/home
