1.2.6 Appropriate exam behaviour activity
The well-known strategy of writing notes on your hand is an obvious example of inappropriate exam behaviour. Other examples, however, aren't as clear.
Decide if the following five statements are true or false to see if you know what appropriate exam behaviour is.
1. You can remove a page from your exam booklet to take home if it only contains planning or notes.
2. You have finished your exam but it is the last 10 minutes so you cannot leave. You have left your exam booklet closed on your desk so it is OK to wave to your friend.
3. It is OK not to provide a full reference in examinations but you need to acknowledge someone else's idea by referencing the author.
4. If you bring a mobile phone into an exam, the worst that can happen is that you will have your mobile phone confiscated or have to re-sit the exam.

Incorrect
Correct! Bringing any unauthorised materials into the exam will have far more serious consequences. You may not receive any marks for the exam or in some cases, the whole course. These consequences will be applied regardless of whether you use what you have brought in. If you have any unauthorised materials or if you are not sure if something is allowed, you should speak to a supervisor immediately.
5. If someone else looks at your work during an exam, you may be accused of cheating.
-
Correct! The student who is reading or attempting to read your work has clearly breached ethical scholarship. However, make sure your work is not visible to others as this may be interpreted as collusion. In other words, you do not want to be accused of assisting another student to read your work.
Well done! You have finished this activity.
