Educational excellence in the heart of the Catholic tradition

In 2021, the Catholic Institute of Sydney (CIS) and The University of Notre Dame Australia established a partnership.

Our partnership offers a variety of accredited coursework and research programs. Some of these programs are unique to the Catholic Institute of Sydney as an ecclesiastical faculty and are taught by CIS lecturers.

Other programs allow students to take courses at both the University of Notre Dame Australia and the Catholic Institute of Sydney as part of their study programs.

Our partnership represents a proactive response to the call for increased cooperation within the Catholic education ecosystem.

CIS-building

What is the Catholic Institute of Sydney?

The Catholic Institute of Sydney (CIS) was established in 1954 according to Canon Law, within St Patrick’s Seminary, Manly, and given the mission to teach Catholic theology and related disciplines, as well as the authority to confer ecclesiastical degrees.

As an ecclesiastical faculty, CIS attends to formational needs of the local and regional Church. Seminarians from across NSW and Canberra study at CIS, as well as the religious and laity who seek to explore the Christian anthropology and Christian discipleship at the heart of the mission of the dicastery. The most recent Apostolic Constitution on Ecclesiastical Universities and Faculties, Veritatis Gaudium, or “the joy of truth” was issued by Pope Francis in 2017. The Statutes of the Catholic Institute of Sydney were revised in the light of Veritatis Gaudium and approved by the Congregation for Catholic Education on 29 July 2021.
