Welcome from Prof Kirsty Beilharz

WELCOME FROM PROFESSOR KIRSTY BEILHARZ

On behalf of all our staff, I would like to welcome you to the School of Arts and Sciences. We acknowledge the traditional owners and cultural custodians of this land on which we work and study: the Yawuru people of the Yawuru Nation (Broome Campus), the Whadjuk people of the Noongar Nation (Fremantle campus) and the Gadigal people of the Eora Nation (Sydney campus). We uphold education contextualised in Catholic faith and values and the provision of excellence in teaching, scholarship and research; in training for the professions; and in pastoral care for students.

Studying with us is an opportunity to shape your own career within a flexible framework of specialisations and interdisciplinary versatility, to render yourself fit for the challenges and aspirations of a rapidly changing world, in which disrupting influences such as climate and environment, emerging technologies, and deeply important social concerns require data and knowledge-based solutions, ethical action, compassionate, altruistic community-focused caring professions, and unique attention through creative and artistic expression. Graduates need to be agile and adaptable with a palette of practical and theoretical skills, confident in their identity and thinking. The School of Arts and Sciences provides a uniquely rich scope for tailoring and piquing interest in relevant disciplines, distinguished by the flexibility of its programs. The campus experience, placement opportunities to gather work and practical experience, and the attention to individual formation and growth we believe contribute to overall flourishing.

In the area(s) of study you choose to emphasise, you will learn transferrable, job-ready skills, developing deep knowledge, the ability to interpret and explain data, generate new insights on the strength of critical and creative thinking, and make recommendations for policy or practice. By study courses from a range of other disciplines, you will develop the capacity to understand different perspectives, work collaboratively to solve problems, and make evidence-based decisions. The flagship Aboriginal Studies and ‘Experience the World’ programs foster cultural competence and a global mindset.

You will be supported and mentored every step of the way by people who know your name and care about your professional and personal growth. Our staff are leaders in their fields. They will assist you to develop the skills, knowledge, and confidence to embark on your chosen career.
