National School of Education

Education is a profession and a vocation focused on the future, and the School of Education will prepare you to ‘be the difference, whether you are learning to be an early childhood, primary or secondary teacher, are already a teacher further developing your knowledge and skills or are contributing to research in education.

Our teacher education degrees qualify you to teach in Catholic, Government and Independent schools anywhere in Australia and are well regarded internationally.

For those who have already completed an undergraduate degree, the Master of Teaching programs include 20 weeks of placements and can be completed in less than 2 years full time study, while also offering part time options for those changing careers.

The School of Education offers a suite of postgraduate professional online learning programs in fields including Curriculum, Leadership & Management, Mathematics Education, Special & Inclusive Education, Early Childhood and Religious Education, designed to equip educators with current knowledge and new skills.

Students interested in building a career in educational research or becoming teacher education academics can study Higher Degree by Research programs including Master of Philosophy, Doctor of Education and Doctor of Philosophy.

Welcome from Professor David Geelan

Welcome from Professor DAVID GEELAN

I am delighted to welcome you to the National School of Education. We are a community of like-minded scholars with a passion for learning and teaching. With campuses in Sydney and Fremantle, it can truly be said that our School spans the nation. Our programs focus on initial teacher preparation, professional learning opportunities for teachers and school leaders, and quality research training.

Teaching is a profession that transforms lives and opens possibilities. Our highly-regarded teacher education programs will prepare you for a career of service to humanity, whether you are leaving school and seeking a career, or already have an undergraduate degree or career in another field and want to teach. If you are already an educator, our postgraduate coursework offerings can enhance your professional knowledge and skills. Our postgraduate research programs offer a path into studying education and exploring ways to enhance it.

A distinctive feature of The University of Notre Dame Australia is the Core Curriculum with its emphasis on Philosophy, Ethics and Theology. This is intended to develop your skills in critical thinking and analysis. It will support you in developing as a fully-rounded citizen who places your professional work within a context of service and social engagement.

A combination of deep theoretical understandings and extensive practical experience in schools (at least 30 weeks, more than in any other university in Australia) means that our graduates are highly esteemed and actively sought after in the Catholic, State and Private education sectors.

In the recent Quality Indicators for Learning & Teaching (QILT) survey by the Federal Government, the Notre Dame School of Education was #1 among Australian universities for Overall Quality of Educational Experience; Interaction with Staff and Student; and Skills Development.

So welcome, and we look forward to working, laughing and learning with you.
