Biology & Environment stream

An understanding of biology and the environment is at the heart of many significant scientific developments, including solutions to global challenges. This Stream equips you with the fundamental skills and knowledge to understand and work with the complexity and diversity of life, from cellular to ecosystem levels.

A strong practical focus gives you valuable hands-on experience of plants and animals from aquatic, coastal and terrestrial settings and introduces you to approaches for the management and welfare of our natural environments.

The flexibility in the Bachelor of Science degree allows you to explore your interests and pursue many career possibilities:

• You can combine this Stream with study in specialist courses such as environmental assessment and spatial analysis to prepare for careers aligned with the monitoring, management and conservation of natural resources.
• You can also combine this Stream with more courses in either Environmental Management, Biology or Archaeology to complete a full eight-course Major.
• Or you can diversify your career opportunities by combining this Stream with courses in complementary disciplines such as Journalism, Film & Screen Production, Business Studies, Politics and International Relations or Social Justice to form a six-course Minor.

  • BIOL2260 Plant Diversity
  • BIOL3250 Aquatic Science
  • BIOL3000 Adaptations for Survival in the Australian Environment
  • GEOG3110 Coastal Processes and Planning

  PLUS SIX (6) Elective Courses

  These courses could be used to form a Major in Biology, Environmental Management and Archaeology or a Minor.

  Core Curriculum

  • CORE I: Foundations of Wisdom
  • CORE II: Elective
    • Electives in philosophy and\or theology
    • Professional embedded electives that integrate studies in a profession with philosophy and\or theology
    • An option to undertake a pilgrimage embedded in the study of the philosophy and theology of pilgrimage, e.g., World Youth Day
    • An option to undertake a course that integrates philosophy & theology with community service and charity work
    • An option to undertake an elective in philosophy, theology, and the liberal arts contained within an international experience

• Career opportunities

  Graduates of the Biology & Environment Stream have the opportunity of employment across private and government sectors and not-for-profit organisations, including graduate positions as an environmental advisor, conservation officer, educator, biologist or ecologist. Further study in post graduate programs is also available.
