Multidisciplinary Science

If you are attracted to the idea of being able to move between diverse careers, or if you have a clear, but somewhat unique, idea about your professional future, then this versatile Stream should be considered.

This Stream offers a truly ‘liberal science’ experience, maximising your breadth of learning in interdisciplinary science. The flexibility of this Stream helps you tailor your program to meet your personal interests, if other Streams do not seem ideal for you, and/or caters for unconventional career trajectories where scientific skills offer an advantage.

Breadth of experience is provided through a balance of theory and practice from two or more scientific disciplines, and a focus on developing skills in critical thinking, innovation, analysis and communication are prioritised. Interdisciplinary perspectives also encourage holistic and creative approaches to problem-solving which are highly sort after by employers and applicable to many workplaces.

You can combine this Stream with courses from non-science areas such as Journalism, Politics and International Relations, Behavioural Science, Social Justice, Preventive Health, or Business Studies. These courses could form a six-course Minor or be used to further broaden knowledge, perspectives and experience.

  Complete the Core Curriculum courses
  Complete the EIGHT (8) required core Science Courses

  PLUS SEVEN (7) courses for the Multidisciplinary Stream:
  The THREE (3) required courses:

  • ARCL1020 Introduction to Archaeology
  • GEOG1110 Physical Geography: Climates, Geology and Soils
  • BIOL2100 Animal Diversity OR BIOL2260 Plant Diversity

  PLUS ANY FOUR (4) upper year Science or Mathematics courses approved by the Program Coordinator, of which a minimum of two (2) must be at the 3000 level.

  PLUS SIX (6) Elective Courses
  These courses may be used to form a Minor.

  Core Curriculum

  • CORE I: Foundations of Wisdom
  • CORE II: Elective
    • Electives in philosophy and\or theology
    • Professional embedded electives that integrate studies in a profession with philosophy and\or theology
    • An option to undertake a pilgrimage embedded in the study of the philosophy and theology of pilgrimage, e.g., World Youth Day
    • An option to undertake a course that integrates philosophy & theology with community service and charity work
    • An option to undertake an elective in philosophy, theology, and the liberal arts contained within an international experience

• Career Opportunities

  Employment destinations of graduates from this Stream will vary depending on the specific path taken, however opportunities are broadly available across private and government sectors and not-for-profit organisations, including careers in research and development, health, manufacturing, public service and resources. In particular, graduates of this Stream may consider pursuing a career outside of the field of Science, but where scientific thinking is a valuable attribute. The Multidisciplinary Science Stream also provides excellent entry opportunities into professional postgraduate courses, research and medicine.
