  • Biography

    Dr Hiruy Gebreegziabher is a Lecturer (Teaching and Research) at the School of Law and Business, The University of Notre Dame Australia (UNDA), Fremantle. Before joining UNDA in August 2022, Hiruy lectured and tutored a range of law units including Evidence, Criminal Law and Procedure, and Employment Law at Monash and La Trobe Universities in Melbourne, Australia. Prior to moving to Australia in 2014 for his PhD, Hiruy held academic and administrative positions at the University of Gondar in Ethiopia.

    Hiruy is a human rights lawyer and academic with a PhD in Human Rights Law from Monash University, Faculty of Law. His PhD thesis evaluated the human rights compatibility of Ethiopia's Anti-Terrorism Proclamation and its implementation. Immediately after submitting his PhD thesis, he served as a member of working group of experts tasked to provide technical advice to the Ethiopian government on how to amend its Anti-Terrorism Proclamation. His research was cited in documents leading to the amendment and some of his recommendations accepted in a subsequent amendment. Hiruy has undertaken research and published widely at peer-reviewed journals in Ethiopia, Italy and South Africa. He also presented conference papers in Ethiopia, Italy, the United States of America, Canada and South Africa.

    From July 2018 to July 2022, Hiruy worked as a teaching associate at Monash University lecturing Evidence and tutoring in units including Evidence, Criminal Law, Criminal Law and Procedure, Principles of Criminal Law and Procedure. He was also involved in International Human Rights Law, Human Rights in Australian Law, Public International Law and Human Trafficking, Modern Slavery and the Law. Hiruy also worked as and a research assistant to Prof. Jean Allain at the Castan Centre for Human Rights Law (Modern Slavery project).

    From November 2018 to July 2022, Hiruy held a concurrent position as a sessional lecturer at La Trobe University, School of Law, where he held the chief examiner and lecturer role for Employment and Labour Relations Law and International Cybercrime. He also worked as a seminar leader for Criminal Law, Evidence and Criminal Procedure as well as Legal Practice and Conduct.

    Before moving to Australia in 2014, Hiruy had more than eight years of experience teaching various courses (including human rights law, criminal law and procedure, labour law, law of contracts, international law, intellectual property law and land law) at the University of Gondar, School of Law both at the graduate and undergraduate levels. He co-designed the LL.M curriculum in international human rights law. He also made an immense contribution in leading a free legal aid service program as a Director of the University of Gondar’s Legal Aid Centre from April 2010 to October 2013.

    • Hiruy’s thesis titled “Striking the balance: A human rights analysis of Ethiopia’s anti-terrorism laws and practice” was completed as part of his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) candidature at Monash University in 2018.
    • Hiruy’s research interests include Human Rights Law, Anti-Terrorism Law, Criminal Law, Labour Law and Modern Slavery and human trafficking.
