A Legacy of Care: The Geraldine Merchant Scholarship and Support for Nursing Students

For Terry Merchant, philanthropy is rooted in a deep appreciation of care, service and the people who dedicate their lives to supporting others.

In honour of his wife, Geraldine, Terry established the Geraldine Merchant Scholarship in Nursing at The University of Notre Dame Australia. The scholarship reflects a shared belief in the importance of nursing as one of the most compassionate and essential professions in healthcare.

In honour of his wife, Geraldine, Terry established the Geraldine Merchant Scholarship in Nursing at The University of Notre Dame Australia. The scholarship reflects a shared belief in the importance of nursing as one of the most compassionate and essential professions in healthcare.

The scholarship provides financial support to nursing students as they progress through their studies, helping to ease the pressures that can come with undertaking a demanding and meaningful degree. It enables students to focus on their learning, clinical development and commitment to patient care.

For recipients, the scholarship represents more than financial assistance. It is a recognition of their call to help others and a reminder of the impact nurses have on individuals, families and communities at some of life’s most vulnerable moments.

In addition to establishing the scholarship, Terry also generously supports Notre Dame’s Practicum Support Scheme, helping ensure students undertaking compulsory clinical placements to continue their studies without financial hardship becoming a barrier. Expanding his philanthropic impact even further, Terry recently extended his support to a third program at the University: The Terry Merchant Rural Nursing Practicum Support Scheme, which provides critical financial assistance to undergraduate nursing students experiencing hardship during full-time rural placements clinical placements are an essential part of nursing education, providing students with real-world experience in hospitals and healthcare settings.

However, they can also create financial pressure due to travel, accommodation and reduced capacity to work during placement periods, especially for those undertaking rural placements. Support through the Terry Merchant Practicum and the Terry Merchant Rural Nursing Practicum Support Scheme Grant helps students remain focused on developing the skills and confidence needed to enter the profession.

Through these contributions, Terry is helping to strengthen our next generation of healthcare professionals at a critical stage in their education. His support ensures that students not only have access to financial assistance but also feel recognised and encouraged as they prepare to enter a demanding and deeply important profession.

Together, the Geraldine Merchant Scholarship in Nursing and support for the Terry Merchant Practicum Support Scheme and the Terry Merchant Rural Nursing Practicum Support Scheme represent a lasting investment in the future of healthcare. Terry’s generosity honours Geraldine’s name while helping to shape the nurses who will care for communities for years to come.
