A legacy of compassion: Honouring Jake Robinson through the next generation of doctors

Some people leave a lasting mark not only through what they achieve, but through the way they care for others. Jake Robinson was one of those people.

A graduate of The University of Notre Dame Australia, Jake was a compassionate and highly accomplished doctor whose life reflected a deep commitment to serving others. After completing a Bachelor of Pharmacy in 2014, Jake worked in the public health system before returning to university to pursue medicine.

Jake graduated from Notre Dame in 2019, where his excellence was recognised with awards including the Dean’s Commendation AMA Prize for Best Student in Year Three and the Peter Anderton Memorial Prize in both years three and four. This award recognises students who demonstrate compassion, strong patient relationships, clinical excellence and the qualities of an outstanding future general practitioner.

Following graduation, Jake worked across hospitals including Fiona Stanley Hospital and Bunbury Hospital in Western Australia, as well as placements in Tasmania and New South Wales. He progressed to registrar level and developed a strong interest in cardiology, with a position at Geelong Hospital planned for his return to Australia.

Jake’s care extended well beyond clinical practice. He mentored young Indigenous boys into education and employment pathways and was widely admired by peers for his generosity in sharing “Jake’s Notes”, study materials that became invaluable to other medical students.

Outside medicine, Jake lived life with energy and enthusiasm. He was a talented sportsman, representing Western Australia in cross-country running at school, playing multiple sports including cricket, football and basketball, and pursuing a lifelong passion for surfing.

His love of the ocean often saw him travelling long distances to surf breaks that offered space and reflection away from hospital life. In 2024, Jake’s life was tragically cut short while travelling in Mexico with his brother Callum and friend Carter Rhoad.

In his memory, Jake’s parents Martin and Debra Robinson established the Callum and Jake Robinson Foundation, creating the Jake Robinson Medical Scholarship at The University of Notre Dame Australia. Valued at $10,000 per year, the scholarship supports medical students who demonstrate academic ability and a commitment to compassionate, patient centred care - values that defined Jake’s life and work.

In 2025, Notre Dame awarded the inaugural scholarships to two medical students, Robiel Abraham and Ramona Khanlu, beginning a legacy of opportunity and support.

Through this scholarship, Jake’s compassion, excellence and generosity continue to shape the next generation of doctors, ensuring his impact lives on in the patients they will care for and the communities they will serve.
