Academic Milestones Celebrated at Notre Dame's Sydney Graduation

19 June 2024

The University of Notre Dame Australia proudly celebrated the academic achievements of more than 700 students at the International Convention Centre (ICC) in Sydney a fortnight ago. This event marked a significant milestone for the graduates, their families, and the broader university community.

Chancellor Chris Ellison extended heartfelt congratulations to the graduates, saying, "we are incredibly proud of each and every one of you and look forward to seeing the positive impact you will make”.

The top-performing students in each cohort delivered moving farewell addresses.

Katherine Grace Gurney, representing the School of Law and Business, delivered a heartfelt speech, highlighting the collective effort and support that led to this momentous day.

“We are not gathered here today as a group of individuals, but as a family,” she said. “From the moment we crossed the threshold of 104 Broadway Chippendale, we embarked on a shared journey that has led us to this very moment of achievement - our graduation.”

In the second ceremony, Nick van der Laan from the School of Medicine reflected on the unique challenges faced by his cohort, particularly during the global pandemic.

“Our medical education has equipped us with the knowledge and skills necessary to diagnose, treat, and comfort those in need,” he said. “But beyond the textbooks and the wards, let us remember the importance of compassion, empathy, and humility. For it is these qualities that truly distinguish a good doctor from a great one.”

Vice Chancellor Professor Francis Campbell also acknowledged the contributions of the university’s faculty and staff.

"Our educators have played an instrumental role in guiding these students to this moment,” he said. “Their commitment to excellence in teaching and mentorship has equipped our graduates with the knowledge and skills needed to succeed."

Graduates are encouraged to stay connected with the university through its alumni network, which offers a range of opportunities for professional development and community engagement. Check out the photos from the graduation ceremonies below.
