We have acquired the historic ‘Blackfriars’ site in Chippendale, expanding its Broadway Campus by 6,059 square meters in Sydney’s Tech Central! This addition will enhance campus connectivity, foster a vibrant educational hub, and support future growth in Health and Education, addressing workforce needs and promoting community engagement.
The University of Notre Dame Australia is excited to announce its acquisition of the ‘Blackfriars’ site, at 4-12 Buckland Street, Chippendale. Adjacent to Notre Dame’s current Broadway Campus, this significant new purchase will substantially expand our presence in Sydney.
Spanning an impressive 6,059 square meters in the heart of Sydney’s Tech Central precinct, the site includes four buildings: two heritage buildings, a modern childcare facility, and a redundant facility occupying part of the site which is earmarked for redevelopment.
Notre Dame’s purchase also ensures the Blackfriars site is used for education purposes, as it has been since the 1880s. The University intends to retain and improve the former school heritage assets on the site to deliver a world-class educational and community precinct that will be integrated with the existing Notre Dame Campus. This diverse mix of existing infrastructure and development potential aligns with our goal of enhancing student experience and improving campus connectivity.
Early development of the site will focus on connecting and integrating the current St Benedict’s Courtyard with the newly purchased Blackfriars Courtyard, enhancing its usability and integration with other existing buildings to deliver a new vibrant heart to the Campus. The expansion will also facilitate better flow and access across the Broadway Campus, supporting our commitment to fostering a collaborative educational community in one of Sydney's most dynamic areas.
The growth of our Campus will enable the continuation and expansion of our commitment to excellence in the development of professions, especially for the high-demand sectors of Health and Education. Notre Dame’s ethos and curriculum aims to attract students with a strong commitment to equality and social justice and aims to excite and prepare students to work across a wide range of contexts, in particular rural and remote contexts, First Nation students and communities, and students of non-English speaking, and low-socio-economic backgrounds.
Notre Dame’s presence on the site will also see it utilised to address the chronic teacher and health workforce shortages that continue to impact on the delivery of essential public services, as well as contributing towards delivering jobs growth through a highly skilled workforce that meets current and future requirements of business and industry.
