Founders gather to celebrate Notre Dame’s legacy

The University of Notre Dame Australia celebrated Founder’s Day with a Mass and luncheon that brought together some of the founders and donors who helped shape the University.

With commemorations held on each of our Campuses in Fremantle, Broome and Sydney, the events honoured those whose early contributions guided Notre Dame in its formative years.

Among the guests at a special event in Fremantle were the University’s influential first Vice Chancellor, Peter Tannock AM, and founding Governor and former Chancellor, Peter Prendiville.

The guests took part in a Mass celebrated by former Governor and Trustee, Monsignor Kevin Long, before gathering for lunch and sharing stories and memories with current staff.

Notre Dame’s Chancellor, The Hon. Christopher Ellison, said the event recognised the vision and dedication of the University’s founders, highlighting the lasting legacy of their contributions.

“It was truly a special moment to have so many of the people who have helped shape Notre Dame gathered together in one room,” he said.

“Their vision, dedication and belief in what this university could become laid the foundation for everything we do today. We continue to be inspired and guided by our founders as we look to the future.”

Before the Mass, Dr Tannock was given a tour of the Fremantle Student Hub - an experience that left him reflecting on the legacy of the University’s founding figures.

“I was really impressed by the new facilities and the thoughtful design that supports both learning and community,” he said.

“Walking through the Student Hub, I couldn’t help but think of some of our fellow founders who are no longer with us. I wish they could see the remarkable developments that have been made because they would be really proud of how far we have come.”

Founder’s Day acknowledges all of those who contributed to – and continue to play a part in – the unfolding story of Notre Dame.

From the initial vision for the University, to welcoming our first students in February 1992 and pursuing the vision set out in our 2022-2026 Strategic Plan, Notre Dame has a rich tradition of harnessing the power of education to change lives, form good citizens and help people flourish and achieve excellence.

Today, our focus remains on delivering exceptional learning experiences through our distinctive approach to education.
