Minister officially opens Notre Dame’s Kimberley Centre for Remote Medical Training

20 August 2025

The University of Notre Dame Australia was honoured to host Western Australia’s Acting Premier, and Minister for Regional Development, Ports, Science and Innovation, Medical Research and the Kimberley, the Hon Stephen Dawson, at our Broome Campus to officially open the Kimberley Centre for Remote Medical Training (KCRMT).

This unique education program accepted its first cohort of 20 first year and seven second year students this year. Seven students in the inaugural group are from the Kimberley and Pilbara.

The students will complete their training on Notre Dame’s Broome Campus, and their clinical placements in rural and remote areas.

The Acting Premier toured the new purpose-built student accommodation, spent time with the medical students and attended the Broome Graduation Ceremony on Friday night.

The centre is WA’s only fully remote medical training program. It is an important step to improve rural and regional healthcare, with evidence showing medical professionals who train in the regions are more likely to practice there.

The program has been generously funded by the Australian Government, which provided $10 million for new student accommodation and infrastructure upgrades.

Notre Dame was also delighted to welcome a large number of guests to the opening to see first-hand the transformative medical training experience of the KCRMT and the new state-of-the-art facilities.
