The University of Notre Dame Australia’s law students Alicia Dharani and Beau Ward have taken top honours at the inaugural Great Western Moot.
Bringing together law students from four of Western Australia’s law schools, the Great Western Moot marked the return of an intervarsity mooting competition for the first time since 2019 and showcased the outstanding legal advocacy skills of WA law students.
The competition was designed to foster camaraderie between WA’s law schools and elevate the standard and profile of mooting.
The Notre Dame students’ outstanding advocacy, legal analysis and courtroom skills saw them triumph in a strong field of competitors from The University of Western Australia, Murdoch University and Curtin University.
Notre Dame School of Law and Business National Deputy Head of School, Dr Rupert Johnson, congratulated Alicia and Beau on their achievement.
“This is an outstanding result for Alicia and Beau and a testament to the dedication, preparation and advocacy skills they have developed through their law degree at Notre Dame,” Rupert said.
“To be named the inaugural Great Western Moot champions in a competition featuring outstanding law students from across four WA law schools is a remarkable achievement and one of which they should be immensely proud.
“Their success reflects the high calibre of our law students, the engagement of Notre Dame Law Students’ Society and Notre Dame's commitment to providing practical, profession-focussed legal education.”
The Grand Final was judged by members of the Western Australian judiciary, the Honourable Andrew Beech SC, the Honourable Justice Robert Mitchell and the Honourable Justice Joshua Thomson.
The competition was supported by Francis Burt Chambers and the College of Law and came together through the collaboration of the presidents of WA’s law student societies.
Notre Dame’s win highlights the strength of the University’s advocacy program, which provides students with valuable opportunities to develop courtroom skills, confidence and professional experience alongside their law studies.
